CLASSIFICATION

Antibiotic, Aminoglycoside

EXTRA NOTES

An aminoglycoside, broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptomyces tenebrarius. It is effective against gram-negative bacteria, especially the Pseudomonas species. It is a 10% component of the antibiotic complex, Nebramycin, produced by the same species.

Application:Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside, broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by Streptomyces tenebrarius. It is effective against gram-negative bacteria, especially the pseudomonas species. It is not effective against Enterococci. It is used to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis at the level of 30S (16S rRNA) and 70S ribosomal complex assembly. It is used to treat pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections and is used in combination with other antibiotics to treat urinary tract infections, gynecologic infections, peritonitis, endocarditis, pneumonia, sepsis, respiratory infections, osteomyelitis and other soft-tissue infections. It is a potential therapy for sinus infections1. Product T1783 has been used to study antibiotic resistance

Local:
Tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from species of Streptomyces or produced synthetically, inhibits protein synthesis by binding with the 30S ribosomal subunit. Tobramycin is used for the treatment of a wide variety of infections caused by susceptible gram-negative organisms. It is effective against a wide range of aerobic gram-negative bacilli and some gram-positive bacteria but not effective against enterococci. It is used topically in the treatment of external infections of the eye and its adnexa. Chemical designation is O-3-amino-3-deoxy-alpha- D-gluco pyranosyl(1→4)-O-[2,6-diamino- 2,3,6-trideoxy-alpha-D-ribo-hexopyranosyl-(1→6)]-2-deoxy-L-streptamine. The sulfate salt of tobramycin is soluble in water; administered intravenously and intramuscularly.
